A “donut-districted” assignment area

A five-elementary school district in New Jersey was experiencing financial distress and wanted to save money.

Maps were developed to show new residents that those residing in the closest neighborhoods surrounding an elementary school would be guaranteed assignments there.

Students residing in the “frontier” regions could be assigned to either two or three options. More teacher layoffs were avoided while leveling class sizes.
